Cremona: Dal Violino alla Danza
With Stefano Cataldi and Romano Màdera, free meeting in person at the Philo headquarters (via Piranesi 12, Milan) and on Zoom, Friday 9 February 2024 – 9.00 pm. Fryderyk Chopin linked his work to the piano, a very modern instrument at the time, from which he was able to capture unexplored sounds. Faithful to the poetics of the Polish composer, with the help of the biography “Life of Chopin” written by his friend Franz Listz in 1851 less than two years after the composer’s death, Stefano Cataldi, ethnomusicologist and contemporary composer with experiences ranging from pop to jazz pianism to the composition of sacred music, presents this latest creation of his which he wanted to define as a “biographical picture”. Through the use of the compositional techniques of the Tintinnabuli style he entrusts the story of the human story of the Warsaw master to a string quartet, a piano and electronic music with the intervention of an actor who plays Chopin. Stefano Cataldi, pianist, composer and ethnomusicologist with international experience, already winner of prizes in the USA at the Berklee College of Music in Boston where he taught in the two-year period 1999-2000 where he obtained a diploma in piano and composition, was awarded by HH Pope Benedict XVI a special mention for his Stabat Mater Dolorosa in 2017 and the following year he brings Chopiniana to the stage with the aim of telling a biography in music. Also very active in the field of jazz music, he has been on a national tour for several years with his show Viaggio nel Jazz to which he has linked the book of the same name enriched by the preface by Pupi Avati, in which he tells the biographies of the main actors of this story. Romano Màdera, former professor at the University of Milan-Bicocca, biographical analyst with a philosophical orientation, is part of Philo and SABOF, AIPA, IAAP, LAI.

TRIP IN THE JAZZ
Stefano Cataldi has conceived a musical show starting from his recently published book Viaggio nel Jazz. With the support of a Jazz trio consisting of guitar, piano and double bass, the highlights of this story will be retraced. The show is divided into three parts, each preceded by a brief presentation of the master. It starts with Le origini, then goes to the age of swing and concludes with a path from bebop to cool jazz. Composed themes will be performed by the main actors of the story, entirely arranged and revisited by Maestro Cataldi, starting from the traditional spiritual “Nobody Knows the trouble I’ve seen”, passing through the blues, the swing execution of some traditional jazz standards and a quote of the great Duke Elligton, the audience will be accompanied to listen to the masterpiece “Blue in Green” composed by Miles Davis.

TWENTIETH CENTURY GENIUSES

It was the 6th of July of last year when the great compositor, conductor and arranger Ennio Morricone left us. I had finished just since a few days the musical conversations that for nine years now I realize at the Proceno Castle, it came me to mind to dedicate him the next edition. And here we are to show you this exclusive event! Also this year, for the ninth consecutive year, we will be delightfully hosted by Mrs Cecilia at the ancient Castle of Proceno, which was also recently starring at the television program, conducted by chef Bruno Barbieri, 4 Hotels with an important success. As usual, we will feel welcomed and relaxed within the walls of the castle which was transformed into an “Albergo Diffuso” and Historic Residence. For my part, I will accompany you through the musical listening characterizing the important moments of the career of Maestro Morricone, and the conversations will be enriched by excellent meals already awarded by Michelin guides. In fact, the care to details will be extraordinary as it befits an event of this level. It is right during the tasting of lunches and dinners that those fundamental moments of conviviality will take place, and during them I will be available to all to offer insights and new conversation ideas. During these three intense days we will go through the biography of the great Maestro, I will tell you many interesting and funny anecdotes related to personal experiences that have seen me involved with his activities. After dinner, we will meet in the conference room where we will attend the screenings of two films which soundtracks were created by Morricone, the Orca Assassina and Mission and with great pleasure I will tell you the reasons that guided the Maestro towards certain artistic choices. On Sunday morning, as a corollary to our conversations, we will listen to the concert of the string quartet Haeven Quartett who will perform exclusively compositions of Morricone and one of mine, in world premiere, dedicated to him. From narration to live concert, I await your numerous presence!
