The third solo album by composer, singer, and guitarist Roberto Mazzoli, 50YearsOldBoy, is available on all streaming platforms, released by Nina Records.

During the ’90s, the artist dedicated himself to alternative rock and recorded two albums with the band Hotellounge. In the new millennium, he released two albums dedicated to Brazilian Popular Music (released by Philology Jazz in 2020 and 2016), and to mark his half-century milestone, Mazzoli released an album entirely in English at the end of 2023. This album includes 9 original tracks (plus 2 bonus tracks in the deluxe version) that aim to synthesize a long artistic journey, encompassing classical studies, punk, grunge, a passion for Brazilian music, and songwriting, culminating in the jazz idiom.

All of this is tied together by his boundless love for the guitar—classical, acoustic, electric, semi-acoustic—and his passion for songwriting, lyrics, and singing.

The 11 tracks have a crossover foundation: there’s a strong influence of grunge and Britpop intersecting with blues, soul, East Coast, and bossa nova, with jazz harmonies and moments of improvisation.

The lyrics address autobiographical themes and contemporary social issues: war, virtual society, patriarchy, also employing irony as a tool.

All compositions and arrangements are by Roberto Mazzoli, who sings and plays guitars and tenor saxophone. Gianmarco Tomai is on electric bass, and Mauro Cola is on drums.

The album was recorded and mixed at CAT RUG STUDIO by Leonardo Mirenda (who also plays the steel guitar on track 5) and mastered by Eugenio Vatta in the summer of 2023.

Listening to it reveals the necessity to pay homage to many artists who have influenced Mazzoli, blending these influences with his own personal style in composition, vocals, and guitar playing.
